Why Hypermobility Can Make You Tired Even When You “Did Nothing”

If you have hypermobility, you may know the feeling: you technically “didn’t do much,” but your body feels like it ran a marathon.

Maybe you sat at your desk. Maybe you went to the grocery store. Maybe you stood in line, folded laundry, cooked dinner, or simply tried to hold yourself upright all day. To someone else, that may not sound like much. But in a hypermobile body, everyday tasks can require a surprising amount of hidden effort.

Hypermobility means your joints move beyond the typical range of motion. For some people, that flexibility is painless. But for people with hypermobility spectrum disorder, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or symptomatic joint hypermobility, the issue is not just “being bendy.” HSD can involve joint hypermobility, instability, injury, pain, fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and autonomic dysfunction. One reason hypermobility can be so tiring is that your body may have to work harder to feel stable. Ligaments and connective tissue help provide structure around joints. When that support is more lax, your muscles often have to step in and do extra work.

That means your body may be using energy just to do what other bodies do more automatically: stand, sit, walk, hold posture, stabilize joints, and keep everything from collapsing into end range.

This is why “doing nothing” may not actually be nothing.

Sitting upright can be work.
Standing still can be work.
Walking without overextending can be work.
Keeping your hips, ribs, spine, shoulders, and knees organized can be work.

Fatigue is a common and often underestimated symptom in EDS and HSD. The Ehlers-Danlos Society notes that fatigue can be connected to many overlapping factors, including poor sleep quality, chronic pain, deconditioning, dysautonomia, bladder and bowel symptoms, and mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Research also supports the connection between fatigue and muscle function. One study found a positive relationship between fatigue severity and muscle weakness in people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. [3] In plain English: fatigue is not just about being sleepy or unmotivated. It can be connected to the physical demand of living in a body that has to work harder for stability.

Pain can add another layer. Chronic pain is exhausting because it demands attention, changes how you move, interrupts sleep, and keeps your nervous system on alert. Even low-level pain can drain energy when it is present all day.

Poor sleep can make the cycle worse. Many people with EDS or HSD struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling refreshed. Pain, joint instability, and other symptoms may cause people to wake throughout the night, which can prevent deep, restorative sleep. [4]

Some people with hypermobility also experience dysautonomia, including POTS-like symptoms. Dysautonomia affects automatic body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature regulation, and digestion. Research has found that dysautonomia is common in people with hEDS/HSD and that exercise intolerance can be a key feature. [5]

This is why hypermobility fatigue can feel different from normal tiredness.

Normal tiredness often improves with rest. Hypermobility fatigue may not fully lift, because the same underlying demands are still there: unstable joints, overworking muscles, pain, poor sleep, dizziness, and a body that has to think about stability all day.

So if you feel tired after a day that looks “easy” from the outside, you are not being dramatic. Your body may be doing more behind the scenes than anyone can see.

A gentler way to think about support

For hypermobile bodies, support is not always about restriction. Sometimes support is about giving the body more feedback, more awareness, and less guesswork.

Gentle pressure around the core, hips, or lower back may help some people feel more grounded because it gives the nervous system more information about where the body is in space. That does not replace strength, movement, or physical therapy. But for many people, feeling supported can make daily life feel less effortful.

The goal is not to hold the body rigidly. The goal is to help the body feel less like it has to do everything alone.
